The Ferndale girls enjoyed one of their best days of the season with a big doubleheader sweep over South Fork in a pair of high-scoring softball games in Ferndale on Friday.

The Wildcats won 17-14 and 13-12 and leapfrogged the Cubs in the Little 4 standings to put them in position to seal a place in this year’s Charles Lakin postseason tournament.

Both games were back-and-forth with no shortage of excitement and offense.

“I thought we had a lot of good at-bats,” Ferndale head coach Jeremy Griffith said. “We still have work to do defensively, but overall the girls battled. It was up-and-down most of the day for both teams. Just when you thought you had it, the other team battled. It was a fun day and the girls played well.”

No one more so than sophomore Madison Gossi, who finished the day with seven hits and nine RBIs and hit her first two high school home runs in the opener.

Gossi’s big day included going 4-for-5 with seven RBIs in the opener and 3-for-4 with two RBIs in game two.

Teammate Tinnley Pidgeon also had a day to remember and was 6-for-9 with four RBIs over the two games, including also hitting her first high school home run in game two.

Ferndale’s Olivia Gossi and Alayna Cooney each was 3-for-5 in the opener, with the latter also driving in a run, while Addison Collenberg was 2-for-4 with two RBIs and Danica Dowd was 2-for-5 with an RBI.

Rainy Rodriguez and Yajaira Cantu-Mendez each also was 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Isabelle Ellsmore went 1-for-4 to cap a big opening game at the plate for the home team.

The South Fork bats also impressed despite the loss.

Mackenzie Coleman led the way at the plate and finished 3-for-4 with a walk, while teammates Anora Blackwell and Molly Perkins each was 3-for-5 with a double.

Cloe McConnell also was 2-for-4 with a walk.

The Ferndale bats continued to impress in game two, with 17 more team hits.

In addition to the big games by both Pidgeon and Madison Gossi, Dowd finished 4-for-4 with an RBI and Rodriguez capped a big day by going 3-for-3 with four RBIs.

Cooney, Ellsmore, Collenberg and Cantu-Mendez each also had a hit in the win, with Cantu-Mendez driving in two runs and Ellsmore and Collenberg one each.

Olivia Gossi pitched both wins, as the Cats improved to 3-7 in the Little 4 and hold a one-win advantage over the Cubs (2-8) in the race for the third and final Charles Lakin tournament spot awarded to the Little 4.

Makenzie Brewer also had a huge game at the plate in game two and led the Cubs after going 5-for-5 with a home run, while Coleman continued to impress and was 3-for-5.

Perkins and Blackwell each added two hits, with Perkins also walking twice.

Coleman and McConnell split time in the circle for the South Fork girls.
