By Ray Hamill — A pair of important Big 5 make-up baseball games will be held this week.
And both will have an impact at the top of the conference standings.
On Wednesday, the Arcata Tigers will travel to play the Loggers in Eureka at the Redwood Acres Field.
The game, which will get under way at 4 p.m., will complete a three-games series between the two schools with the Loggers looking to complete the sweep after taking a pair of exciting games at Arcata late last month.
Eureka needs to win to keep pressure on Big 5 leaders McKinleyville.
Last week the Panthers took two of three games against Eureka to move clear at the top of the standings with a record of 4-1.
Eureka is 3-2 in conference, while the Tigers are 0-2 and have not played a conference game since dropping that doubleheader to the Loggers two weeks ago.
This week’s action continues on Thursday when the Panthers host the Fortuna Huskies, also at 4 p.m.
A win for the Panthers would not only secure a series sweep but also would keep them in sole possession of top spot in the standings.
However, they could have their hands full against a Fortuna team that has responded well since a disappointing Big 5 conference-opening doubleheader against Mack.
Since then, the Huskies won two of three Big 5 games against Del Norte, including 10-0 and 8-2 victories.
The Mack boys will also host South Fork in a non-league showdown on Wednesday at 4 p.m.

Drew Franklin and the Huskies will complete their three-game conference series against the Panthers on Thursday.
