Corsairs continue to set multiple PRs at conference preview meet

Despite missing some key athletes, the College of the Redwoods track and field team continued to impress at the Cody Beaumont Invitational meet hosted by Shasta College over the weekend.

And once again, the Corsairs set a lot of PRs as they continue to build momentum for the business end of the season.

“It was kind of a conference preview meet,” CR head coach Reed Elmore said. “All our athletes did extremely well again. We had over 20 PRs across the field.”

Among the most notable results for the Corsairs, freshman Jason McGoldrick placed first in the men’s triple jump with jump of 12.3 meters, as well as third in the high jump (1.78m).

Gabriel Ward also impressed with a second-place finish in the 100m, crossing the line in a time of 11.01 seconds, while Che Jimenez placed third in the 200m in a time of 22.79 seconds.

Jimenez, who is a McKinleyville High graduate, also placed second in the long jump with a jump of 6.03m.

Another former McKinleyville Panther, Aidan Davis, placed fifth in the 1,500m in a time of 4 minutes, 38.19 seconds.

A couple of former Del Norte High athletes also enjoyed strong meets.

Junior Nunez continued his quest for state qualification in the javelin with a PR throw of 49.55m and placed first in the event, while Bryson Price finished third in the shot put (12.54m).

Speedster Tianna Thompson, who is enjoying an outstanding early season in the sprints, missed the event but is expected back soon.

In her absence, several other CR women stepped up, including Chloe Allen, who won both the 800m (2:32.47) and the 1,500m (5:12.11).

“On both the men’s and women’s side we were missing some key players, but everyone stepped up by either winning or placing in the top five in their events,” Elmore added.

The Corsairs dominated the women’s 800m, with Alyssa McCovey placing third (2:40.55) and Anna Grimmet fifth (2:46.31).

McCovey also placed fourth in the long jump (4.13m).

Several CR throwers also impressed in the women’s events.

Fortuna’s Lonna Torrez placed second in the shot put (10.19m), third in the discus (32.88m) and fourth in the hammer (105’ 2”).

CR freshman Violet Cayton also placed in three different events.

Cayton was third in the hammer (120’ 10”) and fifth in both the discus (29.16m) and the javelin (29.85m).

Former South Fork Cub Chase McFarland also impressed in three events, placing sixth in the discus (28.47m), sixth in the hammer (96’ 7”) and eighth in the javelin (25.45m).

“Everyone is getting better and we’re really making progress towards conference, where it counts,” Elmore said. “We;’re also making some marks on the state level. We’re a small school, but going head-to-head we can hold our own.”
