Sequoia FC prepares for biggest season yet with nine teams competing

It’s going to be a busy spring season for local soccer travel club Sequoia FC, which is fielding nine teams in 2024.

Six of them will play league games this coming weekend, while the boys U19 and U16 squads kicked off their seasons recently with impressive showings in the Bay Area.

In addition to those two boys teams, the club includes U14 boys and U13, U15 and U19 girls teams, all of which will compete in league play, as well U10, U11 and U12 youth teams, which will compete in NorCal play dates.

The popularity of the local club is testament to the continued growing popularity of the sport here on the North Coast.

“Going into NorCal Spring League with six teams is a huge accomplishment for our club and our area,” said club director of coaching Taylor McMillin, who also coaches the College of the Redwoods women’s team. “Having our three younger age groups competing in NorCal play dates is extremely beneficial as well.

“I look forward to another season of development for all teams and individual athletes.”

The U19 boys got the season off to an impressive start with a 2-1-1 record at the Juventus Showcase event in San Jose earlier this month, while the U16s went 2-2 at the same event.

Both teams are made up of current H-DNL players, may of whom will likely take their talents to the collegiate fields in the future.

This past weekend, the U19s kicked off league play with two road games, tying the Oakland Soccer Club 2-2 on Saturday and defeating the Alameda Soccer Club 3-2 on Sunday.

And they enjoyed some balanced offense with five different players — Adrian Magana, Leonel Vargas, Jesus Herrera, Kaleb Green and Cruz Aguilar-Miner — each netting in the two games.

Rylee Collart added a pair of assists, while Aguilar-Miner and Tomas Paoli each also had an assist.

Adding to the occasion, the team traveled to San Jose to watch the Earthquakes’ game on Saturday night, where they served as ball boys for the night.

The club’s three younger teams, meanwhile, traveled to the Bay Area for a couple of play dates over the past two weekends, where each team was involved in three games on each trip.

According to coaches, the young players “displayed an abundance of talent” and have “a bright future.”

The club will hold tryouts for the fall season at the Arcata Sports Complex on April 27 for players born between 2010 and 2015.

The boys’ tryouts get under way at 8:30 a.m., followed by the girls at 10 a.m.

“A huge thank you to the coaches, athletes, managers, Sequoia FC board, parents and everyone else who have had a hand in making it possible for our athletes to continue developing at a competitive level,” McMillin added.
