The Corsairs got the new track and season season off to a good start on Saturday, but head coach Reed Elmore admits they have a long way to go to get to where they want.
The College of the Redwoods men and women traveled to Orland to compete at the Butte Opener and had several impressive performances.
Henry Lamb placed first in the men’s 1,500 meters and third in the 800m, running a PR in each race, while Chloe Allen also took first in the women’s 1,500m.
“We had a lot of PRs all the way around in most events,” Elmore said.
Including 19 PRs by the throwers alone, according to the coach.
However, Elmore says there’s plenty of room for improvement.
“Everyone was kind of rusty coming in, so we have a lot of room for growth to get to where we want to be,” he added.
Among the highlights, Tianna Thompson also had a good day for the Corsairs and placed first in the women’s 200m and third in the 100m.
Airiana Adams placed second in both the women’s shot put and discus and set PRs in both events.
The Redwoods women placed second as a team to Chico.
Jason McGoldrick also placed third in the triple jump, while Junior Nunez was third in the men’s javelin.
Freshmen Anna Grimmett from Eureka High and Aidan Davis from McKinleyville High both ran a PR time in the 1,500m in their first taste of collegiate action.
“Distance is missing a few pieces, but everyone ran very well,” said Elmore, who added “It was a good opener for us.”
