The Cal Poly Humboldt softball team won three of four games at Cal State East Bay this weekend, with a couple of local players making an impact.

The four-game series got under way with a doubleheader on Friday, with the Jacks taking game one 4-1 and game two 3-2 in nine innings.

The Humboldt women lost Saturday’s opener 3-1 but bounced back to take the second game 1-0 to secure the series.

With the wins, the Lumberjacks improved to 5-3 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 9-7 overall.

Former McKinleyville Panther Grace Rosebrook is playing with the Jacks this year after one season at College of the Redwoods in 2021.

Rosebrook appeared as a pinch runner in both of Friday’s games and scored a run in each.

Former Eureka Logger McKenna Beach, who is in her second year with the team, also had an impact.

The Jacks utility player had one of four team hits in Saturday’s loss and finished 1-for-2.

Beach, who was the 2022 Humboldt Sports Big 5 Female Athlete of the Year, has started 14 games for the Jacks this season and is batting .154.

Her best offensive game of the season came at Simpson earlier this month, when she was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and five RBIs.

Humboldt’s Izzy Starr and Alyssa Smokey each had a double in game one on Saturday, while pitcher Gaige Garcia gave the Jacks a chance to win with a solid performance in the circle.

Garcia gave up just two runs on five hits and one walk in 4.2 innings.

Vanessa Richie got the win in the circle in game two on Saturday, allowing six hits in six scoreless innings for her second victory of the season.

Starr scored what would be the winning run in the top of the ninth inning of game two on Friday, reaching home plate on a Vanessa Saltos double.

The Jacks will play back-to-back non-conference doubleheaders at Menlo College on Sunday and Monday, before returning home to host Cal State San Marcos in a four-game conference series next weekend.
