Five local wrestlers qualified for this weekend’s CIF state wrestling championships in Bakersfield and all of them were in action on Friday.

In the boys championships, at 138 pounds, Del Norte junior Curtis Bartley opened the tournament with a victory by pin over Sutter’s Braden Whitmore before advancing to face a familiar foe in his second match.

Bartley, who won a North Coast Section championship last week, then lost a 5-1 decision to former Del Norte youth wrestler Thunder Lewis, who was the No. 7 seed in the bracket and now competes for Clovis High.

Bartley would bounce back to defeat Placer’s Enzo Gallo with a 7-1 decision in the consolation bracket, before bowing out of the tournament with a narrow 3-2 loss to No. 9 seed Timothy Murabito of Los Gatos.

Lewis, meanwhile, advanced to the quarterfinals before suffering his first loss, and the sophomore standout would win one match in the consolation bracket on his way to placing eighth.

Del Norte’s Colton Schaad also was in action at the tournament in the 165-pound division.

The Warriors junior lost his opening match to No. 13 seed Brock Kitchen of Buchanan in a 7-0 decision, but responded with a 17-5 win over Hayden Tadeo of Garces High in the consolation bracket.

Schaad, who also won an NCS championship last week, would end his tournament with a 16-0 loss to No. 14 Brae Sepulveda of La Costa Canyon.

Fortuna’s Mason Evanow was the third H-DNL wrestler to qualify for the boys championships after also winning a section title last week.

The Huskies senior competed at 126 pounds and dropped this opening match to No. 12 seed Kaden Obien of West Park, who won with a 7-0 decision.

Evanow later lost to Aaron Sitva of Calvary Chapel with a 3-1 decision.

In the girls tournament, Del Norte’s Channey Schaad and Fortuna’s Chloe Cox represented the H-DNL.

Schaad competed in the 105 division and lost her opening match to Maggie Cornish of Tesoro with a fall.

She would bounce back to beat Chloe Sampson of Mira Mesa with a pin in the consolation bracket, before losing to Paradise’s Maleah Ballejos by fall.

Rounding out the local contingent of wrestlers who made it to the prestigious tournament, which is one of the biggest and most competitive in the nation, Cox was handed a tough opening match at 110 against No. 4 seed Eden Hernandez of Poway and lost by pin.

The Fortuna senior, who along with Evanow became Fortuna’s first ever two-time state qualifiers, lost to Benicia’s Svea Gonzalez by pin in the consolation bracket to end her tournament.
