College of the Redwoods women drop two games at Monterey Peninsula

The College of the Redwoods softball team traveled south to play at Monterey Peninsula on Friday and dropped both games of a doubleheader.

The Corsairs fell 10-2 in the opener and 7-0 in game two, falling to 1-8 on the season.

The Corsairs took an early lead in game one, but quickly found themselves trailing after giving up six runs in the opening two innings.

CR’s Jewely Bibancos-Knight finished 1-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while Ashley Pierce was involved in both of the team’s runs, scoring one and driving in the other.

Maeghan Hampton also had a base hit and scored a run, while Diamond Bibancos-Knight, Dania Nathalia Chavez, Caitlin Caughie and Allie Egbert, who had a double, each also had a hit to round out a six-hit team performance.

“We saw good and bad things,” head coach Megan Valente said. “We hit the ball well at times but not as a team. We’re leaving too many players on base.

“We’re still working on making adjustments at the plate and as a team on defense, where players will play.”

The Bibancos-Knight twins, who played for Hoopa last year, both also had hits in game two and each finished 2-for-3, including a double by Diamond.

Egbert and Hampton each also had a second hit on the day, while Kyla Cockerham finished 1-for-3.

Chavez pitched all seven innings for the loss in the circle, allowing seven hits and striking out one.

“Every time we play we’re getting better and that will have us ready when we start conference,” Valente said.

Monterey Peninsula improved to 6-9 with the sweep.

The Corsairs will try to get back on track when they play a doubleheader at Ohlone next Friday.
