Determined Panthers win thrilling NCS playoff showdown at Arcata

By Ray Hamill — North Coast Section playoff basketball doesn’t get any better than this.

A packed house, two great rivals, and a season’s worth of dreams and hopes on the line.

On Saturday night, the McKinleyville Panthers and Arcata Tigers faced off for the fifth time this season at Arcata High in a do-or-die NCS Division-4 quarterfinal.

But unlike the first four matchups — which were were evenly split with two wins apiece — the stakes were higher this time around and the intensity matched the occasion, with the game played in front of a full house and going right down to the wire.

No more than than three points separated the sides at any stage through the opening three quarters, but it was the visiting Panthers who walked away with the victory, outscoring the home team 18-14 in the final period to win 49-45 and keep their season going.

“This was our best game to come together and play for each other, not the individual,” McKinleyville head coach Chris Davis said. “We’ve improved on this throughout the season, but I felt this was four quarters of what we’ve been trying to accomplish.”

The Panthers, who had lost the two previous matchups between the schools by a combined 43 points, looked like a determined team this time around.

But they were going up against the hottest team in the H-DNL, one that had won seven straight games and was riding the momentum of an exciting Dick Niclai tournament championship last week.

It showed in a highly-entertaining matchup that thrilled the packed house.

The Tigers held a one-point lead after the opening quarter and the teams were deadlocked 18-18 at halftime and 31-31 after three quarters.

But the Panthers slowly began to take control.

The opened up the fourth quarter on a 9-0 run punctuated by a Cole Armstrong alley-oop on a pass from Flynn Creighton that brought the visiting fans to their feet.

McKinleyville would stretch the advantage to 10 with just under three minutes remaining, but it was far from over.

A Dawson Vallerga 3-pointer pulled the home team within seven with two minutes to go and the Tigers quickly added back-to-back baskets to cut the deficit to three.

Bode Douglass, who hit two key 3s on either side of the interval between the third and fourth quarters, and Jordan Brown, who returned to the lineup after missing the Panthers’ playoff opener through injury, each hit one of two free throws to put their team back up by five with 19 seconds remaining.

And after that there was no way back for the Tigers.

Armstrong and Justin Wells each also added a late free throw to keep the Tigers at bay.

“So happy for this group of guys to battle the whole game and come out on top,” Davis said. “Arcata battled hard in the fourth after our run and that goes to show the heart and composure that group has.

“We talk about ‘next play,’ peaks and valleys and mental toughness, and I’m proud of how we responded when things went south late. They kept their head and learned form it.”

The win not only sends the Panthers on to next week’s NCS semifinals, but it also guarantees them a place in the upcoming state playoffs.

And it was achieved with a balanced offense.

Creighton finished with a team-high 11 points for McKinleyville, which improved to 20-11, while Armstrong, Wells and Douglass each had 10 points.

Armstrong also had six blocks, while teammate Nick Maher chipped in five points and six boards.

“Jordan and Cole played amazing defensive games, but the team as a whole played great team defense,” Davis said.

Dayquan Dunn scored a game-high 12 points for the Tigers, who closed out their season 18-11, while Luke Lemke finished with 10 points and Vallerga added nine points.

“Congrats to (Arcata head) coach (Kellen) Maynard and his team on a great season,” Davis added. “They had to battle through adversity and injuries all season and did a great job overcoming.”

The Mack boys will play at No. 1 seed Justin-Siena in Wednesday’s Division-4 semifinal.
