BOYS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — Loggers bounce back at Enterprise

File photo – The Eureka Loggers went 2-1 in tournament play this week.

The Eureka Loggers bounced back from a loss to Enterprise on Friday to beat Mt. Shasta in the third place game at the Enterprise tournament on Saturday.

The Loggers fell 58-44 to the host school in the semifinal but responded with a 65-53 win over the Bears to close out tournament play 2-1.

The shorthanded Eureka boys played without injured standout Jahmil Rippy and Jerome Lyons, but they got big contributions from elsewhere on the roster, including Julian Goodman, who stepped up “in a big way,” according to assistant coach Andrew DeHart.

Goodman scored a team-high 27 points in the win and was named to the all-tournament team.

“He was really focused in and came out aggressive on the offensive end,” DeHart said.

The junior forward finished with four 3-pointers.

Elijah Estrada also impressed and finished with eight points, as the Loggers improved to 10-6, while Trenton Gerber and Will Mooney each added seven points and Prince Latimer led the team defense.

The game was tied at halftime, but the Loggers would take control after the break.

“We pulled away with grit on defense in the second half and ball movement on the offensive end,” DeHart added.

Nelson Botzler-Washington finished with 12 rebounds and helped seal the win with a couple of clutch free throws late in the game.

Estrada scored a team-high eight points in Friday’s loss, while Rippy had eight points and Latimer seven.

Fortuna

The Huskies closed out the Windsor tournament with a 56-52 win over the host school on Saturday.

Fortuna finished 2-1 in tournament play, having defeated Elliot Christian 73-31 on Thursday and also losing to Menlo-Atherton 66-36 on Friday.

“Winning two games at that tourney is a solid weekend,” said head coach Norm Sotomayor, whose team improved to 10-5.

The Huskies led by 12 at halftime on Saturday and had to withstand a late rally by Windsor to hold on for the victory.

“We controlled the game but Windsor is good and made some shots at the end to make it close,” Sotomayor added.

Russell Pascascio scored 14 points in the win and was named to the all-tournament team.

Alfonso Medina also had a big game for the Huskies and finished with a game-high 23 points, including 17 in the second half, while teammate Kobe Spaulding added 12 points.

In Friday’s loss to Menlo-Atherton, Pascascio scored a team-high 10 points, while Kallen Barrote added six rebounds and four points and Medina finished with seven boards, four assists and four points.
