Senior guard Anyessa Bettega led the way in a statement win for the Del Norte Warriors at the Fort Bragg girls basketball tournament on Saturday.
As they prepare for their league opener on Wednesday night, the Warriors defeated Fortuna 63-37 in the final, clinching their second tournament championship of the season.
Bettega scored a game-high 18 points in the final and was named tournament MVP, leading a dangerous Del Norte offense.
“We could not slow down a hot shooting Del Norte team,” Fortuna head coach Tom Chapman said.
Lauren Stutes and Brooklyn Carter were each also named to the all-tournament team for the Del Norte girls, who improved to 12-2.
And the Warriors appear ready to challenge for a league championship in what is expected to be a tough and competitive Big 5.
“I’m proud of the way the team has come together this preseason,” Del Norte head coach Dylan Nelson said. “They have fun and work hard. It’s a great group of young ladies.”
Jacalyn Gorbet also as instrumental in Saturday’s win and scored 13 points, while Breann Winingham added seven points.
Stutes and Carter each finished with six points in the win, which was the team’s fourth straight, while Khloe Smith chipped in five points.
Gorbet helped set the tone with a big first quarter, while Smith kept the momentum going with a strong second quarter.
Kalie Chittenden and Allie Cox were named all-tournament for the Huskies, who were 2-1 in tournament play.
Chittenden scored a team-high 14 points in the loss, while Mariah Bravo added eight points and Cox finished with six points.
After a disappointing first half, the Fortuna girls adjusted well in the second half.
And with an 11-5 record, the Huskies will carry plenty of momentum into Wednesday’s league opener after a good pre-league schedule.
“Overall it was a successful tournament and I am happy with the progress we made as a team this preseason,” Chapman said.
The Huskies will tip off league play at home against Arcata on Wednesday night, while the Warriors will open at McKinleyville.
Both games are scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
