The Crusaders also remained hot and stretched their winning streak to four straight games with back-to-back victories at the Louisiana Holiday Shootout in New Orleans.

The St. Bernard’s girls defeated St. Charles Catholic 46-15 in their tournament opener on Wednesday and followed that with a 53-31 over Warren Easton on Thursday.

Ten different SB players scored against St. Charles Catholic, led by Laila Florvilus with 15 points.

Thursday’s game was closer but the Crusaders still ran out to a comfortable 18-point win.

Florvilus again paced the offense with 16 points, while ever-improving freshman Samantha Sundberg scored 11 points as the Crusaders enjoyed a more balanced offense.

Defensive standout Aliyah Vigil finished with 10 points, while Shanahan chipped in eight points.

The SB girls lost their semifinal matchup on Friday afternoon, falling 46-36 to Smith County out of Tennessee.

After starting slow, the Crusaders overcame a 13-0 deficit to take a three-point lead in the third quarter, but Smith County would rally late to take the victory.

“I was super proud of the girls for the way they battled for four quarters,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said. “Smith County was tall, athletic and well coached, and we played toe-to-toe with them.

“This game will help us get better for the league season and the playoffs.,”

Florvilus paced the offense with 20 points in the loss, while Shanahan added nine points.

The St. Bernard’s girls, who are now 9-2, will close out tournament play in the third-place game on Saturday afternoon.

The Huskies continue tournament play against Windsor on Friday at 5 p.m.

Eureka

The Eureka Loggers saw their nine-game winning streak come to an end at the West Coast Jamboree on Thursday, falling 44-41 to Montgomery.

The loss was just the second of the season for the Eureka girls, who dropped to 11-2.

Head coach Cliff Napoleon described the loss as “disappointing” after the Loggers found themselves facing an early 10-point deficit after missing some free throws and lay-ups.

“In the first half we beat ourselves,” the coach said.

The Eureka players responded with a much-improved second half and opened up a five-point lead with two minutes remaining, but were unable to hold on late.

“We just ran out of steam,” Napoleon said.
