The College of the Redwoods women are beginning to build some momentum on the basketball court as they head toward conference play.

On Thursday the Corsairs opened the San Jose tournament with their third straight victory, beating Saddleback 74-55.

“The ladies showed up to win,” head coach Jain Tuey said. “From the start we set the tone with our energy and intensity on defense, which led to easy buckets in transition.”

Ronee Norwood scored a team-high 22 points in the win, as the CR women improved to 5-9, while teammate Ellie Pesch finished with 19 points.

Olivia Railsback also had a big game for the Corsairs.

“She flew around defensively, forcing turnovers and then dishing the ball out to open players on offense,” Tuey said of the freshman guard.

Norwood also played with a determination and “was not going to be stopped,” according to the coach.

“She kept the team’s energy high and was determined to get this win,” Tuey said of the sophomore guard.

“It was a full team effort and it was great to see them click on the court and just play.”

The Corsairs will try to keep their winning streak going when they play San Jose City College on Friday night at 7.
