It’s shaping up to a very good year for South Fork Cubs sports.
Just two weeks after the school’s football team won a first-ever North Coast Section championship in football, the Cubs’ two-time defending Little 4 boys basketball team won the Redwood Classic for the first time ever with a 51-44 win over Priory in the final at Anderson valley on Saturday.
The victory lifts the Cubs to 5-0 on the season and they closed out tournament play with four wins in four days.
They opened the tournament with an 85-16 win over the host school on Wednesday and followed that with a 63-25 win over Willits a day later.
In Friday’s semifinal, the South Fork boys beat Cloverdale 63-53 to advance to Saturday’s final, where they defeated Priory 51-44.
In doing so they became only the second Little 4 team to win the tournament in its 64 year history.
“My team did an excellent job staying together and really competing for the whole game and the whole tournament,” head coach Taylor Morrow said. “I’m really proud of how hard we are playing, how committed we are and how quickly we are learning.”
Tommy Rotbergs, Trevor Hunt and Broc Contreras were all named all-tournament for South Fork.
Hunt had a big game on Saturday and scored a team-high 16 points, while Wesley Way showed “excellent leadership and facilitating,” according to the head coach.
“Broc provided great energy and rebounding, including defense,” Morrow added.
Brock Fowler also gave the Cubs a big lift off the bench.
The Cubs, however, had to battle just to get to the championship game and they overcame a slow start in Friday’s semifinal that saw them trailing 20-9 early in the game.
But the team made some adjustments at halftime and Rotbergs came alive after the interval, scoring 17 of his team’s 25 points in the third quarter.
He finished the night with 34 points.
Hunt also played well and finished with 12 points with some efficient shooting, missing just one of his shots.
“Defense and the kids’ ability to try new things made the win possible,” Morrow added.

Took a search of HWY 156… it connects HWY 101 to HWY 152… HWY 152 connects Gilroy to the north on HWY 101 to I-5.
Typical long stretch of Ag land country road where Geno perished… sad, maybe we all can take gratitude that this guy knew how to outreach to kids in sports, something most of us likely could do better at.
