Dyer brothers shine as Crusaders win Upper Lake tournament

The Dyer brothers have begun the new boys basketball in impressive fashion for St. Bernard’s and they’re not the only ones.

On Saturday, the Crusaders capped three big days at the Upper Lake tournament with another big win, beating the host school 63-36 in the championship game.

The win was the third in three days for SB, which improved to 3-0 on the season.

And Seth and Liam Dyer both played pivotal roles for the Crusaders with senior Seth Named tournament MVP and sophomore Liam named to the all-tournament team, along with teammate Wyatt Simoni.

“It was good team basketball offensively and defensively,” head coach Issac Gildea said. “We’re moving the ball around and from top to bottom we did a good job through the tournament.”

Seth Dyer finished with a game-high 22 points in Saturday’s win, while Liam Dyer added 11 points.

Simoni, meanwhile, chipped in nine points and also had six rebounds.

Freshman Garrett Shanahan also had a big tournament in his first taste of varsity basketball, adding six rebounds to give him 28 boards in three tournament games.

Fellow freshman Trenten Hagler also had a big tournament.

“All five of those guys really did an amazing job this weekend,” Gildea said of the Dyers, Simoni, Shanahan and Hagler. “I couldn’t be happier as a coach.”

The Crusaders, who had just a couple of days of practice before the tournament because many of their players were still playing football until last weekend, will play at the Mt. Shasta tournament next weekend, where Gildea expects a much bigger test for his players.

The SB boys also beat Maxwell (85-26) and Round Valley (75-49) at the Upper Lake tournament.
