The Del Norte Warriors seem to enjoy playing Eureka.

On Friday night they welcomed the Loggers to Crescent City for their Homecoming game and league opener and after a slow start to the night they dominated the rest of the way, running out to a 48-6 win.

Senior Max Borges and sophomore Levi Larch both had outstanding nights in the win and combined to score all seven Del Norte touchdowns, six on offense and one on defense.

With the win, which was their 11th straight over Eureka, the Warriors improved to 3-3 on the season and 1-0 in the Redwood League, joining the Fortuna Huskies atop the early standings.

“I was happy with how the night went,” Del Norte head coach Nick White said. “It was Homecoming and our first league game and I thought our kids came out and played really well.”

The loss was the third straight for Eureka, which dropped to 1-5 on the season and 0-1 in league play.

Larch had a breakout game and finished with 195 yards on just eight carries for an incredible 24 yards average.

After a scoreless first quarter, the Warriors began to take control of the game in the second with Larch and Borges leading the way, and the home team carried a 21-0 lead into the break.

Borges opened his team’s account, receiving a pitch from quarterback Trent Cronk and taking it 53 yards to the end zone.

Larch would add a 49-yard TD run and Borges an 11-yard TD run before the quarter was out.

They carried that momentum into the second half, with Larch quickly ending any hopes of a comeback when he broke free for a 56-yard TD run, and Adrian Alvarado added his fourth PAT to make it 28-0.

Borges, who finished with 74 yards rushing on 11 carries, added two more TDs on runs of one and six yards later in the half, giving him four for the night.

Larch would close out the scoring on a 65-yard pick six late in the fourth quarter.

“Those guys are playing good,” White said of Borges and Larch. “Max has really been doing good the last three weeks, he’s really stepped up. And Levi’s getting better and better every week, and he’s stepped up at corner as well.”

The Warriors finish the night with 428 yards offense, while holding the Loggers to under 200.

The Loggers’ only touchdown of the night came on a 62-yard TD pass from quarterback Ben Klein to Orrin Kelley in the fourth quarter.

Both teams will be back in action next week.

Eureka plays at Arcata and Del Norte travels to Ferndale to take on the unbeaten Wildcats.

“I like where we’re at right now,” White said. “The kids are getting better week to week.”
