The Humboldt Eagles 19Us opened the American Legion postseason with a one-run loss to Petaluma in Fairfield on Thursday, falling 4-3 in eight innings.

The Eagles now must win their next two games on Friday and Saturday to advance to Sunday’s semifinals.

Head coach Matt Tomlin used six different pitchers in the loss, meaning everybody will be available for the next few games.

Rogan Bode led the offense in Thursday’s loss and finished 3-for-4 at the plate with a double.

Cole Ayala, who was included recently on the CalHiSports all-state high school teams, also had a good game at the plate and was 2-for-3 with two RBIs, while Ethan Thomas finished 2-for-4.

Bode took the loss on the mound in relief.

He threw the final 2.2 innings and gave up one run while striking out three.

Cooper Ohlsen, Aidan Dorsch, Matt Letter, Ayala and Cody Collins each pitched one inning.

The Eagles will continue tournament play against Yolo Post 77 at 10 a.m. on Friday and they will conclude pool play against Napa Valley on Saturday, also at 10 a.m.

The top two teams from each of two pools advance to the semifinals of the eight-team tournament.

The championship game will be played on Monday.
