By Ray Hamill — A “fun” season for the Northern Humboldt Giants will continue this weekend as they get to host their own four-team tournament.

The action gets under way on Friday afternoon at the Arcata High School field and will run for three days.

The Southern Humboldt 76ers will also compete at the tournament, along with teams from Siskiyous and Sutter.

It’s been a successful season so far for the Giants, who improved to 8-3 with a big 11-0 win over the Humboldt Eagles at the Redwood Fields in Cutten on Tuesday night.

Ad that’s not all.

“It’s a fun team,” head coach Troy Ghisetti said. “We’ve got a good mix of everybody from throughout the county.”

This year’s team features high school players from five different H-DNL programs, including Arcata, Del Norte, Eureka, Hoopa and McKinleyville, as well as a seventh grader and three eighth-graders.

Tanner Kees and Joe Tanno combined on the mound on Tuesday to shut out the Eagles, and pitching has been one of the Giants’ strongpoints this summer.

“They’ve been pitching well,’ Ghisetti said of his staff. “The kids are doing a good job on the mound and we’ve been able to stay in games with some timely hitting. It’s been a fun season.”

Among the highlights through the opening couple of weeks, Kees and Jackson Kelly have both pitched no-hitters for the Giants.

The weekend tournaments starts at 2:30 p.m. on Friday when the Giants play Siskiyous, with the 76ers playing Sutter at 5 p.m.
