BOYS NCS ROUNDUP — Cubs qualify for NorCals; Tigers come close

File photo/Phoebe Becker – South Fork’s John Harding, pictured in action earlier in the week, had another good game for the Cubs in Saturday’s NCS quarterfinal.

The South Fork Cubs are peaking at the right time.

On Saturday night, the Cubs comfortably took care of business in the North Coast Section Division-6 playoffs, defeating Fremont Christian 76-51 in Miranda.

Unfortunately for the H-DNL, the Cubs were the only local boys team to win their quarterfinal.

In Division 4, the Arcata Tigers gave Marin Catholic all they could handle down in Kentfield, before falling 67-63.

The loss ends the season for the Arcata boys, who arguably exceeded expectations this winter as a young roster that features two starting sophomores and a starting freshman won a second consecutive Big 5 title and barely lost a thrilling Dick Niclai Tournament final in overtime.

“The guys gave their best effort and that’s all I can ask,” head coach Kellen Maynard said.

The Tigers closed out the season 18-8.

Also in Division 4, the Fortuna Huskies fell 98-51 against No. 1 seed University at Kezar Pavilion in San Francisco to end their season.

The Huskies close out 18-11.

Ferndale also lost on the road against the top seed in their bracket, falling 76-51 to Cornerstone Christian.

On Friday night, the St. Bernard’s boys lost their Division-5 quarterfinal, falling 68-43 at No. 1 seed Urban.

The Cubs came out ready to go in Saturday night’s Division-6 quarterfinal and played well defensively on the way to a comfortable win over Fremont Christian in Miranda.

The No. 3 seeded Cubs put up 21 points in the opening quarter, while holding the visitors to just 14 points in the first half, and the Little 4 champs appear to be peaking at an opportune time.

“We are definitely playing the best basketball of the season right now,” head coach Taylor Morrow said. “It’s really fun to watch.”

Tommy Rotbergs led all scorers with 21 points despite being the focus of the Fremont defense.

“Tommy had a very good game against a tough defense that was face guarding him the whole time,” Morrow added.

Shevy Bero-Vanmeter and John Harding each also had a good game and finished with three 3-pointers apiece.

“My starting five played particularly well,” Morrow said.

Including Wesley Way and Jesus Duron, who did a good job against some dangerous Fremont shooters.

The win sets up a semifinal showdown on Wednesday night at No. 2 seed San Francisco Waldorf — the top-ranked D-6 team in the state, according to MaxPreps — and guarantees the Cubs a place in the state playoffs, which tip off the following week.

Luke Moxon scored a team-high 26 points as the Tigers came close to knocking off a higher seed on the road.

“I thought we played well,” Maynard said. “I thought we played well enough to win the game.”

The No. 5 Tigers started well and showed no ill-effects from the long road trip, but the home team, seeded No. 4, settled into the game and began to take control.

The Arcata boys made a late run, but a couple of defensive breakdowns proved costly down the stretch.

“At the end of the day they just made a couple of more shots than we did,” the Arcata coach said.

Josiah Gomez scored nine points in the loss, while Dawson Vallerga finished with eight and Kalani Butor and Dayquan Dunn each added seven points.

Senior Brandon Bento-Jackson had six points.

The Huskies were unable to match the dynamic offense of the defending section champions in San Francisco.

The home team came storming out of the gates and scored 60 first-half points to quickly take control of the game.

Alfonso Medina scored a team-high 13 points for Fortuna, while Cody Collins added 10 points.

Donald Bickle also had an impact offensively for Fortuna and finished with nine points while Russell Pascascio chipped in seven.

While disappointed to lose the game, Fortuna head coach Norm Sotomayor said afterwards that he was pleased with the effort of his players.
