Two H-DN girls team are headed to the NorCals, the only question is which two.
On Wednesday night, four of the five H-DN teams in action won their opening games to set up a pair of all-local Division-4 North Coast Section quarterfinals, with the winning teams guaranteed to move on to the NorCal playoffs regardless of how they fare the rest of the way in the section playoffs.
All in all, it was been a very successful opening round for the local contingent, with the Hoopa girls the only H-DN team to lose and six H-DN teams advancing to the quarterfinal round.
St. Bernard’s, McKinleyville, Del Norte and Arcata all won in Division 4, one night after the Eureka girls own their opening game in the Division-3 bracket.
The No. 3 seeded St. Bernard’s girls defeated No. 14 Cloverdale 65-48 and will now host Arcata in the next round after the No. 6 Tigers won 54-46 at No. 11 Fort Bragg.
No. 4 Del Norte defeated No. 13 Ygnacio Valley 79-68 in Crescent City and will now host McKinleyville after the No. 5 Panthers comfortably got the better of No. 12 Middletown 47-27.
In Division 5, No. 12 Hoopa lost at No. 5 Head-Royce 60-45 to end the Warriors’ season.
The Ferndale girls, who are seeded No. 1 in Division 6, also will play in a quarterfinal this coming weekend after receiving an opening-round bye.
The Wildcats will play No. 9 Tomales after the Braves beat No. 8 Quarry Lane 56-29 on Wednesday.
The St. Bernard’s girls played all 15 players in their NCS opener.
Laila Florvilus scored a game-high 24 points in the win, as the Crusaders improved to 21-5.
Madelyn Shanahan added 15 points in the win, while Mataya Sherman and Aliyah Vigil each finished with seven points.
Rihana Fontenot added four points, Hannah Finck and Amaiyah Her had three apiece and Shaya Robinson had two.
“I was very happy with our performance,” SB head coach Matt Tomlin said.

The Panthers managed just five points in the opening quarter but quickly settled into the game after that and pulled away for a comfortable victory to set up a fourth showdown with Del Norte this season.
Gabby Watson scored a team-high 12 points in the win, as the Mack girls improved to 16-9 on the season.
All of Watson’s points came on 3-pointers, including three in the fourth quarter.
Camryn Pinard also had a good game and finished with 10 points, while teammates Kim Lewis and Trinity Preston each had six points, Tatum Fisher had five and Bella Turner had four.
The Panthers took control of the game by outscoring the visitors 15-5 in the second quarter and led by nine at halftime.

The Warriors trailed by three at halftime, but outscored the visitors by 23 points in the third quarter to take control of the game.
The Wolves, however, refused to go down easily and made a game of it with a big fourth quarter, thanks in large part to the play of Leniyah Fulsom, who finished with a game-high 45 points.
“It was a fun game,” Del Norte head coach Justin Clifton said. “You couldn’t tell they had traveled seven or eight hours. They showed up ready to go. Definitely better than a 13 seed.”
The Wolves caused some problems for the home team early in the game with their speed, but the Warriors began to exert control with their dominance inside.
Lily Wilson had one of her best games of the season and finished with 10 points and double-digits in rebounds.
“She had a lot of rebounds and clogged up the paint, and did a lot of things that don’t show up in the stat book,” Clifton said of Wilson.
Lili Nunez also was instrumental in the win and finished with a team-high 24 points, while the ever-improving Brooklyn Carter added 17 points.
Jacalyn Gorbet added 14 points and Kimora McCovey finished with six.
The Warriors improved to 20-8 with the win.
