GIRLS BASKETBALL ROUNDUP — A good day for the H-DNL teams

File photo – McKinleyville’s Bella Turner was named to the all-tournament team at Healdsburg.

It was a successful day for several H-DNL teams at various tournaments on Saturday, with two taking home tournament championships early in the day.

At Mt. Shasta, the St. Bernard’s girls defeated Del Norte 39-31 in the championship game, while Ferndale defeated the host school 50-47 in an exciting Trinity Holiday Classic championship.

We’ll have more on the Ferndale game on Monday.

Also in action on Saturday, the Eureka girls defeated Maria Carrillo 67-37 in the third-place game at the Maria Carrillo tournament.

Fortuna and McKinleyville both won at the Healdsburg tournament, with the Huskies defeating Kelseyville 53-11 and the Panthers beating Middletown 40-33.

The Hoopa girls also were in action at the Trinity tournament, losing a pair of games to Redding Christian and Fort Bragg.

The Arcata Tigers also played Ukiah at the Healdsburg tournament late on Saturday night. No details were immediately available.

With their win over Maria Carrillo, the Eureka girls improved to 7-2 on the season.

One night after a tough San Marin team caused the Loggers problems with its full court press, they responded with a much better outing against the host school’s press game.

“We saw the traps coming tonight,” head coach Cliff Napoleon said.

Kaitlin Giacone capped three big days in tourney play with a team-high 16 points in the win, while Amaya Gee finished with 14 points.

Aniah Gaither also had a good night and scored 12, while Moriah Bowles rounded out a balanced offensive team performance with 11 points.

Mariah Napoleon also had a big game in the win as she continues to play a key role in the paint for the team and create scoring opportunities for her teammates.

“She was manning the middle in all three games and just played solid,” the head coach said.

Next up, the Loggers will play Fortuna at the McKinleyville tournament on Wednesday night.

McKinleyville 40, Middletown 33

It’s been an impressive start to the new season for the McKinleyville girls and that continued on Saturday with their second straight win at the Healdsburg tournament.

The Panthers improved to 5-1 with a 40-33 victory over a quality Middletown team that was 6-2 coming into the showdown.

“We played good,” said head coach Jacob Cheek, whose team also beat Fortuna on Friday after dropping their tournament opener against Ukiah a day earlier. “They ran a three-two zone that we were were able to counter a little bit.”

The Panthers, who swept all three of their games at the Arcata tournament last week, have benefitted from a balanced roster so far this season.

Camryn Pinard led the way offensively against Middletown and finished with 11 points, while Kim Lewis added 10 points, Tatum Fisher eight and Bella Turner six.

Turner, who has provided a big spark off the bench for the Panthers early in the season, was named to the all-tournament team.

The Panthers will host their own tournament next week, with the action getting under way on Wednesday.

The six-team tournament will also feature St. Bernard’s, Eureka, Fortuna, Yreka and Weed.

Fortuna 53, Kelseyville 11

The Huskies closed out the Healdsburg tournament with a much-needed win on Saturday.

Junior Grace Scilacci and senior Haylee Youkey led the way offensively in the win, as the Huskies improved to 3-5.

Scilacci finished with a team-high 12 points and was named to the all-tournament team, while Youkey added 11 points.

The win ended a five-game losing streak for the Huskies, who will host Hoopa on Tuesday night at 7:30 p.m. before opening the Mack tournament against Eureka at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
