The Arcata boys took a big step toward a first league title in seven years with a 4-1 win at Del Norte on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Tigers improved to 8-0-2 with two games remaining, while their closest challengers, the Eureka Loggers, have two more ties and are 7-0-4 with one game remaining.
Arcata can clinch at least a co-championship with a win at South Fork on Tuesday.
The Tigers last won a league title in 2015, when they were co-champs with Fortuna.
Arcata opened up an early two-goal advantage to take control of Saturday’s game, before Mario Ledezma pulled one back for the home team.
But the league leaders would add two more goals after the break and held on to hand Del Norte a first home loss this season.
Josiah Gomez netted twice in the win, while teammates Izaiah Grosveld and Ethan Gyenis each also scored.
Grosveld also had an assist, as did Kayin Kloberdanz.
GIRLS
St. Bernard’s 0, Del Norte 0
Also in Crescent City on Saturday, the Warriors and Crusaders tied 0-0, guaranteeing the visitors at least a share of the Little 4 championship.
With one game remaining, the St., Bernard’s girls improved to 5-1-2 in league play, moving them one win ahead of second-place Ferndale (4-2-2).
The Crusaders can clinch the pennant outright with a win or a tie in their regular-season finale on Tuesday against the Wildcats, who must win to share the title.
The tie also ended Del Norte’s slim championship hopes although it stretched their unbeaten run to six straight, a run that has included three shutouts.
Goalkeeper Deja Payne and her defense have allowed just two goals in their last five games, and even a knee to the face during Saturday’s game couldn’t slow down the standout shot stopper.
“It was a physical game and both teams had chances to win,” Del Norte head coach Cyndi Hansen said.
Hollyn Wakefield, Haley Moerke, Aurora Mitchell and Kalyn Schaad all played well defensively for the Warriors, as did midfielders Teexeeshe Scott, Chaney Schaad and Lilly Schaad.
“Our midfield put in a lot of work playing up offensively and hustling back defensively,” Hansen said.
