Giants 17Us keep rolling; Eagles split two midweek games

The Northern Humboldt Giants continued to set the pace among the local American Legion 17U teams with a 5-2 win over the Humboldt Eagles on Wednesday.

The consistent William Bommelyn was 2-for-4 in the win, while teammate Ty Ghisetti finished 2-for-3 with a double and Joe Tanno was 1-for-2.

Seth Valliere out of Brookings got the win on the mound.

Valliere pitched three strong innings in relief and struck out four.

Tanno got the start and continued to impress, striking out three in two innings.

Ben Lukens also pitched two innings in relief, as the Giants improved to 11-4 on the summer.

Mateo Gutierrez and Miles Sorenson each had two hits for the Eagles, with Sorenson scoring both runs.

Jorge Lopez also had a hit in the loss, while Royce Olson drove in a run.

Drew Franklin pitched 3.1 strong innings and allowed just one hit while striking out five.

Rogan Gans and Sorenson both pitched in relief.

Both teams will play at the Casey Yocom wood bat tournament in Reno this weekend.

Humboldt Eagles 6, Southern Humboldt 76ers 5

The Eagles edged the 76ers in a closely-fought game on Tuesday.

Gutierrez impressed on the mound in relief, allowing no earned runs and striking out three in 4.2 innings.

Cody Collins led the way the plate and finished 2-for-2 with a walk, two RBIs and a stolen base, while Gans was equally effective and finished 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs.

Tyler Maples, Sorenson and Cayden Danbrauskas each also had a hit, with Sorenson stealing a pair of baes and Danbrauskas one.

Alex Jimenez and Olson each also saw time on the mound.
