Arbolida leads Crabs to victory over the Humboldt Eagles

Newcomer Cary Arbolida got the 2022 Humboldt Crabs season off to a flying start on Friday night, hitting two home runs in his debut with the team.

The Orange Coast College player finished 3-for-4 with four RBIs, as the Crabs cruised to a 13-0 victory over the Humboldt Eagles in front of a packed house at the Arcata Ball Park.

Teammate Tyler Davis also enjoyed an impressive debut, finishing 3-for-6 with a home run, two doubles and six RBIs.

Javier Felix also was 3-for-4 in the win.

The Crabs took control early, scoring five runs in the bottom of the first and led 11-0 after three.

They out-hit the local American Legion club 11-4.

Former St. Bernard’s Crusader Caleb Ruiz got the win on the mound, allowing two hits and no walks in five scoreless innings and striking out six.

Former Eureka Logger Hayden Bode also pitched an inning in relief in the win, while Eureka’s Jackson Giacone was walked three times in his Crabs debut and McKinleyville’s Cameron Saso was walked once.

Three Fortuna players accounted for all four Eagles hits.

Cole Ayala led the way and finished 2-for-4, while Matt Letter added a double and Daniel Osborne had a single.

Eagles head coach Matt Tomlin used six different pitchers in the season opener.

Next up, the Eagles will play a single game against the Fairfield Expos on Saturday afternoon at 2 p..m. at the Bear River Sports Complex, while the Crabs will host the Alameda Cardinals in a doubleheader on Sunday, with game one set for 12:30 p.m.

A Saturday night game between the Crabs and Cardinals has been postponed because of the expected rain.
