By Ray Hamill — In the midst of what is a busy few days for the team, the Eureka Loggers have rescheduled a key weekend doubleheader.
The Loggers, who are 7-0 in the Big 5 and riding a nine-game winning streak, will play Fortuna in a doubleheader on Friday, moving the games forward by a day because of the anticipated rain on Saturday.
The team will also play a league-deciding three-game series against the Arcata Tigers (6-1 in the Big 5) next week, and Eureka head coach Jeff Giacomini did not want to risk having to postpone this weekend’s games to next week, which would have limited his pitching options for such a crucial series.
The Tigers are also scheduled to play two games at Del Norte this weekend and head coach Troy Ghisetti was hoping to have those games also moved forward to Friday, but they remain scheduled for Saturday.
Like the Eureka coach, Ghisetti does not want to have to reschedule this week’s games for next week if they are rained out on Saturday, so as to have all of his pitching options available for the Eureka series.
Friday’s doubleheader between the Loggers and Huskies will take place at Bomber Field in Eureka, with first pitch set for 3:30 p.m.
The Loggers will also play crosstown rivals St. Bernard’s in an intriguing matchup at Bomber Field on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
Both teams are coming off big performances earlier this week.
Eureka junior Myles Standish pitched a 47-pitch no-hitter on Wednesday, as the Loggers shut out the Huskies 12-0 in five innings.
The Crusaders, who are cruising through the Little 4, blasted 10 home runs in a doubleheader sweep at South Fork on Tuesday.
St. Bernard’s can clinch the L4 championship with a win at Ferndale on Saturday.
