ATHLETES AND TEAM OF THE WEEK — Record breakers and dynasties dominate

By Ray Hamill — It was a good week for McKinleyville track, Arcata tennis and St. Bernard’s baseball, and all of them are represented on this week’s Humboldt Sports Athletes and Team of the Week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.

McKinleyville junior Soffia Reyes continued her impressive start to the new track and field season with another dominating performance at the Chico Invite, setting two new school records.

Over in Arizona, meanwhile, St. Bernard’s senior Cayden Lee continued to impress at the plate with some outstanding performances against some tough opposition at the Wolves Classic.

And that gets both of them the nod for our athletes of the week honors.

Not to be out-done, the Arcata boys tennis team continued to dominate on the local courts.

The Tigers, who have not lost in the H-DNL in five years, swept all six singles titles at the league championships.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK

Cayden Lee

St. Bernard’s Baseball, Senior

Lee has been on fire at the plate all season and a solid presence at third base and on the mound.

In his first three games at the Arizona tournament last week, he had seven hits, including four doubles and a 4-for-4 performance against Sho Low High.

For the season, Lee is batting .581 with an on base percentage of .640.

He also leads the team with 11 doubles — more than twice as many as any of his teammates — and is second to teammate Nick Dugan with 18 RBIs.

Soffia Reyes

McKinleyville Track, Junior

Reyes was unstoppable once again in Chico, as she continues to rewrite the Mack High record books and set new all-time school marks in two different events.

The speedster ran a sub-minute for the first time ever in the 400 meters and finished in a time of 59.3 seconds, breaking her own school record, which she had set earlier in the season.

She also set a new school record in the 200m, finishing in 25.5 seconds.

The junior standout has now won all eight of her individual races in the 100m, the 200m and the 400m this season.

TEAM OF THE WEEK

Arcata Boys Tennis

Nick Bosch led the way as the Arcata Tigers swept all six H-DNL singles titles at the league championships last weekend.

Bosch won at No. 1 singles and will advance to the North Coast Section singles championships.

But he was far from the only one to impress, with teammates Aiden Waters, Mathias Severn, Lootah Hall, Bruin Nave and Miles Schmidt each also winning a championship.

The six wins for the Tigers follow a regular season that saw them win all 12 of their matches in league play, which remarkably was their fifth straight undefeated league campaign.
