Tigers advance to Shasta tournament championship

Submitted photo – The Tigers will play for the tournament championship on Wednesday.

The Arcata Tigers won their opening two games at the Shasta tournament on Tuesday to advance to Wednesday’s championship game.

What was supposed to be a three-day tourney has been condensed to two days because of the weather, but that didn’t seem to bother the Tigers, who defeated Foothill 6-0 and Red Bluff 12-5 on opening day.

Senior Vincent Agliolo pitched a two-hitter for the win in game one, while striking out 14 and walking just one.

He also had four of his team’s 22 hits on the day, including a double in each game.

“Agliolo was exceptional on the mound,” said head coach Troy Ghisetti, whose team improved to 12-2.

Miles Oliver and Alex Gorge each had two hits in both games, including a double by Oliver in the opener, while Will Mager was 3-for-3 with a triple in game two after hitting a double earlier in the day.

Nick Parker was 2-for-3 with a triple and a double against Red Bluff, while impressive freshman Wilson Medina had a hit in each game.

“They were two very good teams,” Ghisetti said. “We swung the bat very well today.”

Cedar Cline pitched two innings for the win against Red Bluff, with Oliver, Finn Warner and Gorge all pitching in relief in a five-inning game called due to time.

Finn McRae added a hit in the first game and Anthony Ebert had one in the second.

Wednesday’s championship game is set for 1 p.m .
