There were four local high school soccer games on Tuesday, including an impressive win over Arcata for a Ferndale girls team that is playing its best soccer of the year at an opportune time.
The Cats traveled to Arcata and came away with a 2-0 victory as they continue their preparation for the upcoming North Coast Section playoffs.
Also in action on Tuesday, the Fortuna and Arcata boys teams got back to winning ways after losses for both over the weekend.
The Tigers, who lost to Del Norte on Saturday, bounced back with a 9-0 win at Ferndale and improved to 15-4-2, while the Cats dropped to 1-12-2.
The Fortuna boys, who fell to Eureka on Saturday, bounced back with a 9-1 win at South Fork.
The Huskies are now 12-6-1, while the Cubs dropped to 4-12-4.
The Fortuna and South Fork girls also played on Tuesday. No final score was immediately available.
The Ferndale girls scored twice in the final 10 minute to take a tight game against Arcata.
The Hagemann sisters, Macie and Madison, were involved in both of the Ferndale goals.
Madison, a sophomore, netted the go-ahead goal off a free kick by Macie, a junior.
Macie Hagemann was provider once again a few minutes later off another free kick, when teammate Gianna Regli was quickest to react on a rebound in the goal mouth to put the game away.
It was another impressive performance for the defending NCS Division-1 champs, who appear poised for another good playoff run this year.
“We played well,” Ferndale head coach Sam Licona said. “I think every game we’re getting better. I think it’s finally clicking for the team.”
The Tigers battled hard and were in contention until late.
“It was a tough game,” Licona added. “Arcata gave us a battle, but we persevered. We were able to finish strong. We stayed strong mentally.”
It was a team effort for the Cats, who improved to 10-6-2 on the season.
“The whole team played a phenomenal game,” Licona said. “And that for me was awesome to see.”
Senior goal keeper Makenzie Chambers also made some big saves to keep the Wildcats in the game.
The Cats will close out Redwood League play in a rivalry matchup against St. Bernard’s on Saturday afternoon.
It will be Senior Day for the Cats, who will honor their four seniors before the game, which kicks off at 3 p.m.
The seniors include Chambers, Regli, Olivia Gossi and Teresa Catana-Moreno.
St. Bernard’s, which is 4-1 in league play, has already clinched the league championship.
