Sophomore McKenna Curtis pitched a one-hit shutout against McKinleyville in Big 5 softball on Wednesday, as the red-hot Del Norte Warriors won their sixth straight game, 7-0.

Curtis was in command throughout, allowing just one walk and one hit batsman, while striking out 13.

The standout pitcher also had a base hit and a walk and scored two of her team’s runs.

The win was the fourth in four league games for the Del Norte girls and leaves them alone atop the standings and now two wins ahead of Eureka, which had a bye on Wednesday.

Freshman Shay Nolan led the way at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a double, and she drove in two of her team’s runs, while teammate Reece White finished 1-for-3.

Defensively, right fielder Izzy Schrader made a spectacular diving catch in the sixth inning to rob McKinleyville’s Trinity Preston of a base hit.

Preston did, however, get her team’s only hit of the day on a hard line drive to center.

With the win, the Warriors improve to 11-3 overall, while the Panthers drop to 1-3 in league play and 6-4 overall.

The shutout was the Del Norte girls’ second of the season.

The two teams will conclude a three-game series when they meet in a doubleheader at Mack High on Friday afternoon.

First pitch is set for 2 p.m.
