By Ray Hamill — The Arcata Tigers will host a fundraising golf tournament next weekend as they scramble to complete their new baseball field.
The Tigers, who still don’t know where they will play their home games this spring, have been forced to fundraise to complete the new facility, and must find a way to pay for the dugouts, the scoreboard and bullpens, among other things.
They are hoping next week’s golf tournament will go a long way towards that.
“It’s like someone gave us a new car with no wheels or battery and we’ve got to put it together ourselves,” booster and tournament organizer Mark Gorge said.
The tournament will take place at the Baywood Golf and Country Club on Sunday, April 3, and so far 25 teams have signed up with numerous local businesses and boosters showing their support.
Any additional teams interested have until Friday to sign up, and Gorge is still hoping to add some more sponsors, including hole sponsors ($250) and bunker sponsors ($50), as well as some additional auction items for a silent auction.
A number of local businesses and boosters have already shown their support as major sponsors of the event, including JLF Construction, Murphy’s Markets, Harper Motors and Mitch Walter and family.
Humboldt Sports is also pleased to be the exclusive media sponsor of the event.
The tournament will be a four-person scramble and will feature a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Golfers do not have to be a member of Baywood to compete.

Arcata head coach Troy Ghisetti says he has yet to hear from the school district about where the Tigers will play their home games this spring.
The Tigers are scheduled to play their home opener in 11 days.
