Hoopa’s Gerard Marshall won his first-round match at the CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield on Thursday afternoon, before losing a close decision to the No. 7 ranked heavyweight wrestler in the state later in the day.
Marshall is one of four H-DNL wrestlers who qualified for the state tourney and he won his opening match with a pin, getting the better of Joseph Chacon, a sophomore from Clovis West High School.
The Warriors junior then advanced to the round of 16, where he lost to senior Andrew Prado out of Mayfair High in a 3-1 decision.
Marshall, who dominated on his way to a section championship last weekend, is ranked No. 10 in California this week and will now drop into the consolation bracket.
Also in action at the state tournament on Thursday, Arcata junior Joshua Hannan lost his opening match at 126 pounds to Daniel Zepeda out of Gilroy.
Zepeda, a freshman, is ranked No. 12 in the state, while Hannan is No. 21.
The Tigers NCS champion will try to battle his way back through the consolation bracket with eyes on finishing as high as third.
Two H-DNL girls also were in action on Thursday.
Del Norte senior Savannah Williams lost a 6-1 decision to Madeline Santana out of Cajon High at 131, while Eureka freshman Lucia Romero lost her first-round match by a pin at 235.
Both girls will now continue tournament play in the consolation bracket.
The tournament continues through Saturday.
