By Ray Hamill — There’s no shortage of baseball action around the county this weekend.

In addition to the two district Little League all-star tournaments that got under way on Saturday, the Northern Humboldt Giants are also hosting an 11-team American Legion 17U tourney.

The tournament is being played out over three days and features a total of 24 games split between the Arcata Little League field and McKinleyville High, with some top quality baseball.

“It’s been a very high level tournament,” Giants head coach Troy Ghisetti said. “Sutter and Marysville both have good teams, and the Portland team is very well coached. Just the coaching in general is at a really nice level.”

The tournament, which grew in size over the past few weeks, also features teams from Ukiah, Redding, Sutter and Trinity, as well as four local squads, including the Giants, the Southern Humboldt Patriots, the Humboldt Eagles and the NH Knights.

“It just kind of blew up,” Ghisetti said. “And the kids are over here enjoying their time getting out of the heat and having fun.”

The Giants, who are an impressive 18-2-1 on the season, will play for the championship on Sunday evening at 5:30 p.m. against either Sutter or Marysville.

On Saturday, the Giants beat Siskiyou 10-0, improving to 3-0 at the tournament, having also beaten the Ukiah team 5-3 and Trinity 10-3 on Friday.
