By Ray Hamill — After being forced to cancel last summer’s American Legion baseball season because of the pandemic, the Southern Humboldt 76ers are coming back stronger than ever this year.
The local baseball club will field two teams this summer, adding a 19U team to compete along with the usual 17U roster.
“We’ve had quite a bit of interest, and we’re making it happen,” head coach Andy Olsen said.
With senior heavy squads this spring at Fortuna, Ferndale and South Fork, there should be plenty of potential players in the area to field full rosters for both teams.
Olsen, who also coaches the Fortuna High team, will look after the 19U squad, while Ferndale head coach Justin Andersen will coach the 17Us.
With the high school season just having wrapped up on Monday, Olsen says his players will take about 10 days off before the legion teams begin practice.
