The Eureka girls won again on Wednesday, defeating the Tigers 17-2 to improve to 12-0 in H-DNL softball.
The Loggers can close out a perfect season with a doubleheader sweep of Arcata when the two teams meet again this weekend.
The Eureka girls broke open a tight game with seven runs in the fourth and never looked back.
Shortstop Sadie Hampton came up with a big defensive play for the Loggers early on, just when the Tigers were threatening.
The standout senior made a spectacular diving catch to deny Arcata’s Corrina Cunningham a base hit with two runners in scoring position, and then stepped on second base to complete a double play.
“That was a critical play at a critical time,” Arcata head coach Teresa Wheat said. “That play was the best play I’ve seen this season.”
Kira Morris provided the offensive highlight of the day with a home run for Eureka, while Arcata’s Ella Day was 1-for-2 with an RBI, and teammates Morgan Ford and Sagen Sarchett each also had a hit.
It was the final home game for the Arcata seniors.
“We celebrated our seniors today,” Wheat said. “The girls worked hard and knew today was a day to celebrate their teammates. After the game my players stayed and took pictures and enjoyed the day despite the score. I’m proud of them.”
The two teams close out the season with a doubleheader in Eureka on Saturday.
