By Ray Hamill — Two days ago he was named Best Dressed Athlete at the annual Logger ESPYs, and now he’s one of our athletes of the week, sponsored by College of the Redwoods Athletics.
Eureka senior Parker Rodgers is enjoying an outstanding spring in baseball and played a pivotal role in helping the Loggers to their most impressive doubleheader sweep of the season at Fortuna on Friday night.
And that makes him one of our athletes of the week.
There were so many great performances over the last week, however, we had to include a second male athlete of the week.
Joining Rodgers is St. Bernard’s junior Aidan Dorsch, who pitched a no-hitter against Ferndale and has become one of the most dangerous pitchers in the H-DNL.
Rounding out our athletes of the week is Eureka sophomore Ginny Brooks, who won four events at the weekend track and field meet in Del Norte.
Our team of the week, meanwhile, goes to Eureka baseball after the Loggers responded magnificently to their first defeat of the season with Friday’s sweep.
No H-DNL baseball team has been better so far this spring.

ATHLETES OF THE WEEK
Ginny Brooks
Eureka Track and Field, Sophomore
No local athlete has impressed more this spring than Brooks, who is making some serious noise in H-DNL track and field as a sophomore.
At Del Norte on Saturday, Brooks placed first in four different events, the 100 meter hurdles, the 300m hurdles, the long jump and as part of the 4x100m relay team.
In 12 league events this spring, the standout sophomore has won nine times and placed second three times, including a first in the long jump each time.
Brooks will compete in the H-DNL championships at Fortuna on Saturday.

Parker Rodgers
Eureka Baseball, Senior
Rodgers is batting an incredible .514 this spring and leads the Loggers in RBIs (22), doubles (eight) and home runs (one).
In addition to playing a key role behind the plate, on Friday he finished with five hits in the two games at Fortuna, including a triple and two doubles.
An honorable mention here for Rodgers’ teammates Jackson Giacone and Keenan Morris, each of whom have also been outstanding this spring.

Aidan Dorsch
St. Bernard’s Baseball, Junior
In case you hadn’t heard, the Crusaders have two legitimate aces on the mound this spring.
North Coast fans know all about Nick Dugan and what he can do, but opposing Little 4 teams are having just as many problems facing Dorsch, who threw a no-hitter against Ferndale on Saturday, as St. Bernard’s improved to 10-0 against L4 teams.
Dorsch struck out 11 in a 3-0 win, walking just three batters all game for the first no-hitter of his career.

TEAM OF THE WEEK
Eureka Baseball
After tasting defeat for the first time this season against Fortuna last Wednesday, the Loggers responded the way good teams do.
Several players stepped up at Fortuna on Friday to help the team to a 9-6 win in game one and a 9-1 victory in the nightcap.
In addition to Rodgers’ five hits, Giacone had four, while Morris, Brayden Youkey, Zac Anderson and Myles Standish each hit successfully in both games.
