Joey Quen pitches a gem as Huskies bounce back

The Fortuna Huskies bounced back from a disappointing loss at Del Norte on Wednesday to sweep both games of a doubleheader against the same team at Newburg Park on Saturday.

The Huskies won 7-5 and 8-0.

Joey Quen pitched a complete-game shutout in the nightcap, allowing two hits and one walk, while striking out five.

“He was very efficient,” Fortuna head coach Andy Olsen said of Quen, who remarkably threw just 65 pitches and had five innings of single digit pitches. “He was definitely good for us today.”

So too was fellow senior Branson Gans, who pitched six innings for the win in game one, and led a balanced team performance at the plate with three hits on the day, including a double.

In game one, Gans gave up five hits and struck out eight, before Matt Letter pitched the final inning for the save.

“We were a lot better today,” said Olsen, whose team lost on a walk-off to Del Norte on Wednesday. “We made some errors and we had some base-running mistakes, but I feel as a whole we did more things right today.”

Olsen was particularly impressed with his team’s pitchers, who have given up very few walks through the opening three games.

“I was really pleased with our pitchers’ control today,” he said. “That’s been encouraging.”

Nine different players hit successfully on Saturday, including five who had hits in both games.

In addition to the save, Letter had a double in game one, while Cody Collins was 2-for-3 and Gans, Daniel Osborne and Matt Berti each had a hit.

Collins came up big again in game two, finishing 1-for-3 with a double, as did Letter, who was 2-for-3.

Aaron Head-Mason also had a double in the win, while Osborne, Berti, Cole Ayala, Jared Egan and Rylan Lommori each added a hit.

The Huskies are scheduled to play three games against Arcata next week, with dates and times still to be finalized.
