END OF YEAR AWARDS — Time to vote for Athlete of the Year (boys)

VOTING HAS NOW CLOSED

By Ray Hamill — It’s time to vote North Coast sports fans, for your end of year sports awards, including local athletes of the year, as well as a coach of the year and team of the year.

And what a pool of candidates to choose from in a year that was full of memorable achievements in numerous sports by numerous local teams and athletes.

Voting for all four categories will run through the end of the year, with the winners being announced on New Year’s Eve, along with the first annual Humboldt Sports Sportsperson of the Year. as well as our choices for athletes, teams and coaches of the year.

Who could it be?

ATHLETES OF THE YEAR (BOYS) NOMINATIONS 

Merek Sears — Dominated as a junior in high school and has already signed on to play in the PAC-12.

Will Omey — Over 5,000 yards offense for the St. Bernard’s state champion football team.

Lane Thrap — Statistically speaking the top wide receiver in the NCS, and football isn’t even his best sport.

Isaak Gutierrez — A hugely successful first year playing college football and an all-conference selection at Butte.

Landon Gomes — Ferndale’s catalyst in football and baseball, and a key member of the Humboldt Eagles.

Jake Hanson — No one on the North Coast achieved more at a higher level than Hanson.

Conor Barres — After a breakout spring in track and field, the former Logger joined the Pacific University soccer team in the fall.

Thomas Nelson — Leads the way on a sensational CR team in points, rebounds and shooting percentage.

Cass Bell — The most successful of a very talented current group of pro MMA fighters here on the North Coast.
