Mack all-stars hold on for another dramatic win

The McKinleyville 9 and 10 All-Stars don’t know how to quit, and every game they play in at the Little League state tournament seems to be a thriller.

On Tuesday night, they won an elimination game for the second straight night, and they did so in dramatic circumstances yet again, defeating Turlock 6-5.

Three of their four games at the tournament have been decided by just a single run, including an 8-7 win over River Park on Monday.

After giving up an early two-run lead on Tuesday, McKinleyville scored four times in the bottom of the first and added two more in the second to lead 6-3.

With Mack pitcher Avery Saunders and his defense settling down after that, the scored remained the same until the sixth and final inning, when Turlock rallied to load the bases with one out and scored twice to narrow the gap.

That, however, was as much as they could muster, and Mack relief pitcher Cody Wilson and his defense were able to hold on for the one-run win.

McKinleyville is now one of just three remaining teams in the tournament, and will play Land Park a second time on Wednesday night for the right to play unbeaten Cambrian Park for the championship.

Hunter Carper continued his impressive tournament for McKinleyville with three hits in Tuesday’s win, as well as driving in three of his team’s runs.

Joe Tanno and Wilson each had a pair of walks.

Land Park narrowly defeated McKinleyville 2-1 on Sunday, the Humboldt County program’s only loss of the postseason in 11 games.
