A busy offseason for College of the Redwoods sports continued this week, with two more local standouts signing letters of commitment to compete for the school’s track and field team.
Eureka High’s Hunter Ethridge and Sativa Younge both announced they will be taking their talents to the local community college, where they will each compete in the sprints and the jumps.
“We need more depth on our team and both these athletes are outstanding performers and will bring depth to our squad,” CR track and field head coach Reed Elmore said.
Ethridge was particularly effective for the Loggers in the long jump, where he recorded the third best mark in the Humboldt-Del Norte League this past spring, clearing 19 feet, 3.5 inches.
The Eureka graduate also timed a 53.76 seconds in the 400 meters at the league championships, the fourth best mark of the year in the H-DNL.
Ethridge qualified for the North Coast Sections in both events.
Younge, meanwhile, had the seventh best mark in the H-DNL this spring in the long jump, clearing 14 feet, 1.75 inches, as well as the ninth best league mark in the 100 meters, timing a 13.8 seconds.
The two local athletes join a Redwoods recruiting class that also includes Eureka standout Tiana Rodgers and McKinleyville’s Owen Lien, two of the top local track and field prep stars this past season.
