The Fortuna Huskies are making a habit of overcoming tough loses with big wins this season.
On Friday night, they bounced back from last weekend’s loss at Tracy with an emphatic 62-32 victory over Del Norte at Husky Field.
It was Del Norte’s first loss of the season.
“It was a great win for the team,” Fortuna head coach Mike Benbow said. “We came up with a great game plan and our kids executed it. They kind of got after it.”
The Huskies dominated along both lines, paving the way for a deep stable of running backs and receivers to rack up big yards.
The Huskies, who led 41-16 at halftime, finished with 245 yards through the air and 255 on the ground.
Leading the way were Levi Nyberg and Joey Pontes with seven TDs between them.
Nyberg ran for a team-high 73 yards on 10 carries, scoring twice, and added an 85-yard kickoff return for a score.
Pontes led the receivers with 119 yards on five catches, scoring on two of them, as well as adding 58 yards on 12 carries, and two touchdowns.
Quarterback Zac Claus threw for three TDs, including one to receiver Branson Gans, who had two catches for 29 yards.
Kevin Gage also had three receptions for 50 yards, while Daeden Taylor had 57 yards total offense, including a rushing touchdown.
Adam Medeiros added 40 yards of offense.
“Our line dominated tonight, both offense and defense, and we tackled really well,” Benbow said.
Next up, the Huskies (4-2) play at Stellar Prep, while Del Norte (5-1) hosts Trinity.
Friday’s game was a non-league showdown between the two Big 4 rivals.
They will meet again in Crescent City in two weeks in a league game.
