The College of the Redwoods softball team split a doubleheader at Shasta on Monday, two days after sweeping two games at home against Feather River.

The Corsairs are now 4-4 in conference and 7-17 overall.

Kyla Cockerham led the way at the plate for the Corsairs in a pair of one-run games at Shasta, as the visitors took game one 5-4 in nine innings before dropping game two 11-10.

Cockerham finished the day 4-for-5 with three walks and scored the game-winning run in the opener in the top of the ninth.

The CR women led the game 4-0 going into the bottom of the seventh inning, but the Knights rallied to tie the game and force the extra innings.

Dania Nathalia Chavez got the win in relief of starter Francesca Hart, pitching 2.2 innings and allowing four hits and striking out five.

It was her second win in three days and third of the season.

Maeghan Hampton had a triple for CR, while teammate Diamond Bibancos-Knight drove in two of her team’s runs.

In game two, Allie Egbert and Catlin Caughie each also had two hits, with Egbert and Jewely Bibancos-Knight both driving in a pair of runs.

Nae-Rew Martin added a triple and two RBIs.

On Saturday, meanwhile, the Corsairs were involved in another one-run game, taking the opener 3-2 on a walk off and following that with a more comfortable 6-0 victory in game two.

Martin scored the winning run in the opener. After reaching base on a fielder’s choice, the former Hoopa Warrior stole her way to second and would break the late deadlock moments later with two outs on a Hampton base hit up the middle.

Egbert got the win in the circle, giving up just six hits and no walks and striking out three.

The former McKinleyville Panther showed her toughness after getting hit just above the elbow on a catcher’s throw to second on a steal attempt and staying in the game.

Egbert, according to head coach Megan Valente, was “lights out with her change-up.”

“I’m proud of Allie to tough it out and stay in the game and finish the game,” Valente said of the sophomore standout, who had a big “softball bruise” above her elbow.

The Corsairs trailed early but rallied with a pair of runs in the bottom of the third to take a 2-1 lead, before the visitors made for an exciting finish by tying the game in the sixth.

The Corsairs played some outstanding defense in the win.

“After a rough first inning we settled run and played the best defense we have all year,” Valente said.

Caughie and Bethany Masten both had good games at the plate and each finished with a pair of hits in the win, including a double by Masten, who was key for the home team.

“She hasn’t hit much for us this year but we needed her in the lineup today and she stepped up, getting some big hits at crucial times,” the coach said of the former Hoopa Warrior, who has played well behind the plate for the Corsairs all spring.

In game two, the CR women broke open a close showdown late with all six of their runs coming in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Masten remained hot and led the team again at the plate with two more hits.

Caughie added a double, while Egbert drove in two runs.

Chavez pitched seven strong innings for the shutout victory in the circle, allowing just four hits and two walks and striking out two.

“Her rise and change up kept batters on their toes,” Valente said.

She got plenty of help from her defense.

“In both games our defense stepped up and made great plays,” said the coach, who added “The wins were a whole team effort.”

Valente described the sweep as “huge for our program,” coming against a good Feather River team the Corsairs have had trouble against in the past.

“We kept fighting in both games and played as one team,” she said. “And it showed with us taking the wins.”
