Del Norte girls cruise in NCS playoff opener against Hoopa

One week after their historic Charles Lakin tournament championship, the Del Norte girls continued to roll in their North Coast Section playoff opener in softball on Friday.

The No. 2 seeds in the Division-4 bracket comfortably took care of business against H-DNL rival Hoopa, winning 18-0 in five innings in Crescent City.

The win sets up a semifinal showdown against No. 3 Salesian next week and keeps alive the possibility of an all-local championship game against the No. 4 seed Fortuna girls, who will play their quarterfinal against Piedmont on Saturday.

“We got a lot of production from throughout the whole lineup,” Del Norte head coach Aaron Healy said. “We’re looking like a team and performing like we’re coming into our own.”

There were several standouts for the Warriors, as you would expect in such a comfortable win.

Khloe Smith, who has been one of the team’s most reliable defensive players, had a huge day at the plate and finished 3-for-4.

The junior infielder hit a home run in the fourth inning and had five RBIs.

Fellow junior Carlee Harper also continued to impress, as did senior McKenna Curtis, who is closing out her high school career in style.

Harper finished 3-for-4 and once again helped set the tone for her teammates from behind the plate.

“She kept her bat hot and had another good day behind the plate,” Healy said.

The standout catcher did not allow any stolen bases.

Curtis, who has been a force at the plate and in the pitcher’s circle for the team all spring, returned to action after missing last week’s Lakin tournament final through injury and finished 4-for-4.

She also pitched the final inning and had three strikeouts in a one-two-three inning.

Junior Shay Nolan got the start in the circle and was equally effective, allowing just three hits and no walks in four innings and striking out four.

Tsinte Steinruck also had a big say in the win and finished 2-for-4 with a triple and a double, while also making some plays at third base.

Senior Ava O’Reilley also impressed and was 2-for-3, as was fellow team captain Madison Calleja, who continues to do a good job since replacing injured teammate Reece White in the outfield on the final day of the regular season.

The Del Norte defense also played well, holding the Warriors without a run.

“They all did their job, 100 percent,” Healy added.

The Warriors will host Salesian in a semifinal on Wednesday night at 5 p.m.

The No. 3 Salesian girls edged No. 6 St. Joseph Notre Dame 3-2 in their quarterfinal on Friday.

The loss ended the season for the Hoopa girls.
