The South Fork Cubs have become a juggernaut in North Coast Section softball.
On Friday evening the Cubs won a Division-6 section championship with a 12-1 win over top-seeded California School for the Deaf in six innings in Fremont.
Remarkably, it is the program’s third NCS title in their last four full seasons competing.
Even more impressive, the championship was achieved one year after the school was unable to field a team.
After barely missing out on a spot in this year’s H-DNL Charles Lakin postseason tournament, the South Fork players were clearly up for the NCS playoffs.
The No. 2 seeds in the D-6 bracket won their postseason opener against Point Arena on Tuesday by a score of 12-2 in just five innings and played what head coach Lisa Todd described as the best game they’ve played all season.
“Their energy was up, and they came to play, they came to win,” the coach said after Tuesday’s win.
And they clearly carried that momentum into Friday night’s big showdown, ending the game early on the 10-run rule once again.
Todd’s return to the program played a key role on the path to success.
She was also in charge of the team when they won back-to-back NCS championships in 2018 and 2019.
The 2018 title was the first in school history.
After the 2020 season was canceled because of COVID-19, there were no playoffs held after a shortened season in 2021.

The Cubs were then bumped up a division in 2022 and lost their one playoff game to St. Helena.
This year, however, they were back on the field and back in Division 6.
And the rest, as they say, is history.
The section championship continues what has been a very successful year for the school on the sports fields.
In the fall, the Cubs won a first-ever NCS title in football and in the winter the boys basketball team reached a section final for the first time since 1990.
We’ll have much more on the Cubs’ big night, including stats and game details.
