STATE BOUND — Three H-DNL athletes qualify for CIF championships

Three local high school athletes have qualified for the CIF state track and field championships after a strong showing for the H-DNL at this weekend’s North Coast Section Meet of Champions.

Competing at Dublin High School, Fortuna’s Russell Pascascio and St. Bernard’s Laila Florvilus and Madelyn Shanahan all have advanced to next week’s prestigious meet in Clovis.

Pascascio placed first in the boys high jump on Friday with a jump of 6’ 5”, just one week after he also won the event at the NCS Redwood Empire championships.

Pascascio is this week’s Humboldt Sports Athlete of the Week, as he continues to close out his high school career strong.

For good measure, the Huskies senior also placed seventh in the MOC triple jump.

The two St. Bernard’s standouts also are closing out memorable years in multiple sports in style.

Both were recently named all-state in basketball by CalHiSports — including Division-4 state player of the year honors for Florvilus — and both are now headed to one of the biggest high school track and field meets in the nation.

Florvilus qualified in the girls 100 meter hurdles after placing first in Dublin on Saturday.

The SB junior crossed the line in 14.95 seconds for the victory.

On Friday, Shanahan qualified for state after placing second in the girls discus with a throw of 121’ 05”.

Florvilus also placed 11th in the MOC girls high jump.

And they weren’t the only H-DNL athletes to impress at the big meet.

Eureka senior Emily Pesch closed out her high school career by finishing fifth in the girls high jump and barely missed out on moving on to Clovis.

Pesch cleared 5’ 2”.

Ferndale senior Isaak Kasso also placed fourth in the boys 110m hurdles.

In the boys shot put, Arcata’s Skyler Collenberg also impressed on his way to a sixth-place finish.

Pesch’s Eureka teammate Isabella Claussen finished 10th in the girls discus, giving the H-DNL two placers in the top 10 in that event.

Del Norte’s Lily Sherman also was 13th in the girls triple jump.
