Mottashed leads the way as Corsairs stretch winning streak

Mason Mottashed capped a big week for the College of the Redwoods men’s basketball team with another strong performance on Saturday.

Mottashed scored 16 points as the Corsairs beat Napa Valley 82-68 for their third win in three days at the Coach Treggs Classic at CR.

“Mason Mottashed was the difference today,” head coach Rya Bisio said. “He carried us with his pace in transition and in the half court offensively. He evolved this week in real time in front of all of us and we’re so proud of him.”

Kai Purcell also had a good day and finished with a team-high 21 points in the win, while teammate Ty Neff scored 17 points.

The Corsairs started slowly and found themselves trailing 17-2 before they got got going.

“After an apocalyptic start to the game, we found a combination of players who were able to string some defensive stops together and get out in transition,” Bisio said. “Napa staggered us with their enormous confidence and tonality.”

The win was the sixth straight for the CR men, who have overcome a 1-5 start to go to to 7-5.

“It feels like we are a lot closer to figuring out who we are after this week,” Bisio said. “Four games in six days is a real pressure cooker and our guys handled it with toughness and maturity.”

Next up, the Corsairs will host Contra Costa in a non-tournament game on Saturday evening at 5 p.m.
