The Humboldt Eagles 19Us won their final game at the Area tournament on Saturday, but they fell short of advancing to the state tournament after going 2-2 in Fairfield.

The Eagles, a team made up of some of the best high school and college players in the county, lost their third game at the tournament on Friday night, falling 1-0 to Petaluma.

The would respond with a 9-3 win over Yuba Sutter on Saturday, but it wasn’t enough to keep them in contention and ended their summer season.

In what was a must-win showdown against Petaluma, McKinleyville’s Joe Tanno turned in another big performance on the mound, holding a dangerous lineup to just one run.

Unfortunately, the Eagles bats were also held in check and the one Petaluma run proved to be just enough in a tight game.

“Joe Tanno pitched a hell of a game,” Eagles manager Scott St. John said. “He was phenomenal, we just couldn’t help him with hits.”

Tanno threw all seven innings and gave up just three hits and one walk while striking out three.

And he threw a complete game on just 77 pitches.

The Eagles had their chances, loading the bases with one out in the seventh, but they were unable to take advantage.

Saturday’s game against Yuba Sutter was a different story.

Michael Manzi closed out an impressive summer by going 3-for-4 with an RBI and two runs, while Tate Saso was 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs and Brayden Bermers finished 2-for-4 with an RBI and a run.

Lyle McKinnon got the start on the mound and threw four strong innings for the win.

The former Hoopa Warrior gave up just one run on three hits and four walks and struck out three.

Kyle Giacone pitched one inning in relief, giving up a run on one hit, before Manzi closed out the game, allowing two hits and a walk in two innings and striking to two.
