The Crusaders took a break from conference play on Saturday but continued to show why they’re one of the best teams in the area with a dominating win over a young Fortuna team.
The St. Bernard’s boys hosted the Huskies and won 10-1, improving to 15-0 on the season.
And they won with a couple of big performances from a pair of young pitchers.
Freshman Teyler Bailey got the start on the mound and threw four innings for the win, allowing just one run on two hits and no walks, while striking out seven.
Sophomore Saehwan Kwon pitched the final three innings, holding the visitors scoreless, while allowing three hits and one walk and striking out five.
“I was very happy with both pitchers and their ability to attack the strike zone with all three of their pitches,” St. Bernard’s head coach Matt Tomlin said.
The loss dropped the Huskies to 1-14 on the season, but a young roster continues to gain some valuable experience and will only benefit from these games down the road.
“For the most part we’re only playing two seniors consistently,” Fortuna head coach Andy Petersen said. “The majority of our team is underclassmen, so we’re really learning what it’s like at the varsity level. We’re getting some valuable experience.”
Another freshman, Dakota Bestul, enjoyed a big game for the Crusaders behind the plate and also reached base twice, finishing 1-for-2 with a walk and an RBI and scoring twice.
Braylon Johnson also had a good day for the home team, finishing 2-for-3 with a double and an RBI, while teammate Maccoy Rickson was 1-for-4 with an RBI and Garret Shanahan finished 1-for-2 with a double, a walk and an RBI.
Despite the loss, Casey Moore impressed on the mound for the visitors and threw six good innings.
“Despite some some tough defense behind him, he pitched really well,” Petersen said of the senior. “He really battled and he pitched through sone tough times.”
Junior Tanner Franklin also impressed for the Huskies, as he has been doing for much of the spring.
Franklin, who has been a force at the plate, on the mound and at shortstop, finished with two hits and an RBI in Saturday’s loss.
Senior Alex Sharkey added a base hit in the loss, as he stretched his hitting streak to four straight games, which is the longest of his career, and many of his hits have gone for extra bases.
“He’s putting the bat on the ball the last few games,” he coach said.
