By Ray Hamill — After a dry March here on the North Coast, the unpredictable spring weather is taking its toll on the H-DNL schedule this month.
The wet conditions forced the postponement of eight Big 5 games over the weekend, and it continued to impact the local baseball and softball seasons this week.
On Wednesday, four more Big 5 games were affected by the weather and field conditions.
All four have been pushed back to Friday afternoon, which in turn has impacted the weekend schedule.
With the Big 5 lead on the line, a much-anticipated baseball game between McKinleyville (3-0 in the Big 5) and conference leader Del Norte (4-0) in Crescent City was one of the games postponed on Wednesday, along with a Del Norte and McKinleyville softball game.
Big 5 baseball and softball games between Arcata and Fortuna, scheduled for Arcata High School, have also been pushed back to Friday afternoon.
And with the Huskies now playing the Tigers in baseball on Friday, their scheduled non-conference game against an unbeaten St. Bernard’s team (13-0), which was set to take place that day, has also now been postponed.
A busy Friday afternoon will also feature a make-up baseball game in the Little 4 between Ferndale and Hoopa at Hoopa.
That game, which was originally scheduled for last Thursday, is also set for 4 p.m.
The Friday baseball games may also affect a pair of Big 5 baseball doubleheaders scheduled for Saturday.
The Arcata, Del Norte and McKinleyville boys are all now scheduled to play three games within 24 hours, which could impact the team pitching for all three squads.
Saturday’s Big 5 schedule includes a baseball doubleheader between Eureka and Del Norte, which will take place at McKinleyville High School because College of the Redwoods will be playing at Belotti Field, where the Loggers normally play their home games.
The McKinleyville boys will also play a doubleheader at Arcata on Saturday, as will the McKinleyville and Arcata girls, while Eureka will host Del Norte in a softball doubleheader at Washington Field in Eureka.

The McKinleyville girls will travel to play Del Norte on Friday afternoon, before playing a doubleheader at Aracta on Saturday.
