McKinnon delivers as Warriors rally from 10-run deficit to top SB

Junior Tylie McKinnon kept her team well in championship contention with one of the biggest hits of her young life on Tuesday.

McKinnon delivered with a walk-off base hit in extra innings to seal a wild 16-15 win and secure a pivotal doubleheader sweep over St. Bernard’s at Hoopa.

Earlier in the day, the Warriors broke open a tight game late on the way to a 12-5 win in game one.

With the sweep, the Hoopa girls improved to 5-1 in the Little 4 halfway through the conference schedule and kept pace with defending L4 champ South Fork atop the standings.

Game two was a thriller.

After St. Bernard’s scored twice in the top of the sixth inning to open up a 15-5 lead, the Warriors needed at least one run in the bottom half of the inning just to avoid ending the game early on the 10-run rule.

They delivered and went into the seventh trailing by nine.

After holding the Crusaders scoreless in the seventh, the resilient Warriors rallied with nine runs in their half of the inning to force the extra innings.

And after holding the visitors scoreless again in the top of the eighth, McKinnon and her teammates stepped up again to secure the dramatic walk-off victory.

Tsisna McCovey was walked and then stole her way to second, before McKinnon’s big hit to deep left field scored her for the game-winning run.

“My girls worked hard for that one,” Hoopa head coach Ryan Colegrove said.

McKinnon enjoyed a huge day at the plate.

She finished 4-for-6 in game two and had five hits on the day, including three doubles.

Senior Rikki Lipscomb also impressed for the home team, finishing 4-for-5 in game two, while teammates Angela Hern (1-for-3) and Kiera Ashley (1-for-4) each also had a base hit in that win.

McCovey (1-for-1), Ashley (1-for-3) and Kalia Mitchell (1-for-4) each also had a base hit for Hoopa in game one.

Monteya Colegrove pitched both wins for the Warriors, who improved to 11-5 on the season, striking out 16 while walking just one.

Game one was tied at 5-5 going into the bottom of the fifth, but the Hoopa girls would break the game open with seen runs in their half of that inning.

No stats were immediately available for the Crusaders, who dropped to 0-6 in the Little 4 and 3-11 overall.

Remarkably this was the second 16-15 loss in conference play for a young SB team, which lost by the same score to South Fork last week.
