COLLEGE SOFTBALL — Redwoods, Humboldt split weekend conference games

It was a good weekend for the two local college softball teams, as the College of the Redwoods women got their first conference wins and Cal Poly Humboldt split a four-game series with the No. 3 team in the nation.

On Friday, Redwoods welcomed Siskiyous to the North Coast for two conference games and won the opener 9-8 in nine innings before dropping game two 8-4.

On Saturday, CR hosted Butte and again took the opening game 4-1 before dropping game two 2-0.

Redwoods is now 2-6 in the Golden Valley Conference and 9-14-1 overall.

In the opening game against Siskiyous, CR scored twice in the bottom of the seventh to force the extra innings.

The home team trailed 8-5 going into the bottom of the ninth, but would score four runs to secure the walk-off victory.

Audrey Phillips led the home team at the plate and finished 3-for-4 with a double, two RBIs and two runs.

Grace Turgeon and Jordyn Hattery each had two hits in the win and both also hit a double.

Mackenzie Dean pitched all nine innings for the win allowing four earned runs on 11 hits and two walks and striking out four.

Siskiyous would bounce back to take game two, scoring all eight of the team’s runs in the top of the third and never trailing.

Former McKinleyville Panther Bailee Box had a good game at the plate, finishing 2-for-3 with a triple, a double, a walk and a stolen base and scoring twice.

Hattery hit a home run, while Phillips capped a good day with another double.

In game one against Butte, CR scored four runs in the bottom of the third and made them count.

The home team managed just four hits for the game, including a double by Turgeon.

Dean got the win the circle, allowing just four hits and two walks and striking out four in seven innings.

However, CR was unable to score any runs in game two against Butte.

Box added another triple, while Turgeon had a double.

Next up, CR will host Feather River in a GVC doubleheader on Friday, with game one set for noon.

The Cal Poly Humboldt women, meanwhile, traveled to Hayward to play East Bay and split a pair of doubleheaders against the top-ranked team in the West Region.

They lost the series opener 6-5 on Friday, but responded immediately with a 9-0 win in five innings in game two, handing the Pioneers just their second home loss of the season.

On Saturday, the Jacks continued to roll with an 8-2 win in game one, but the Pioneers took the series finale 11-5 to salvage a split.

The Humboldt women are now 6-6 in the California Collegiate Athletic Association and 15-18 overall, and they sit fourth in the conference standings.

Next up, the Jacks will host Cal State Monterey Bay in a four-game series this weekend, with game one on Friday at 1 p.m.
